Between 2022 and 2024, the tournament transitioned from an open national invitational to an official championship sport. Beginning in 2024, NAIA instituted strict conference qualifying tournaments and capped brackets at 20 wrestlers per weight class, so only the top ~35β36 schools with automatic conference qualifiers advance to nationals.
